Michael J. Smith introduces a nail to a very precise hammer
The leading contenders for the Democratic nomination are a man with visible African ancestry, and a woman. Now if you’re Rip van Winkle, and you’ve been asleep for the past fifty years, this is big news.
For those of us who have been awake, however, the gender and skin color of the candidates belong in a small-type footnote. Or ought to. The only reason anybody is hoo-ha’ing about Barack’s nice light-brown skin or Hillary’s ovaries is simply that there is nothing else to cite in favor of either of these palookas.
True, but I have to admit I’m pleasantly surprised by how little the race/gender issue gets talked about by normal people, including many of my Republican neighbors. It’s not perfection, but it’s progress.
First of all, I love the word “palookas!”
And I agree with Snag. “Normal” people I’ve been around don’t talk about it so much. Even the staunch right wingers I talk to don’t focus on that at all.
But, the liberal blogosphere???!!!!
My God. My head was going to explode last week if I heard one more/read one more post about sexism. People were seeing it and talking about it obsessively.
It’s like liberals are hell bent to make me feel like I’m some sort of victim.
“You are TOO a victim of sexism! You’re just too dumb to see it like I do!!!!!”
I can’t stand it. And all that talk is not going to bode well for the Democrats.
Obama and Clinton have, I guess, declared some sort of “truce.”
Yeah, it would be nice if everyone would just grow up a little bit — we’re going to have enough trouble with the Republican smear machine without shooting ourselves in the foot before they can even get started.
Sorry for the rant! But, this has been driving me insane.
And aif, want to let you know I appreciate your continuing efforts to interject some “facts” about the Democrats that everyone’s going bonkers over.
All the talk about racism and sexism is just covering up the real discussion about what these two stand for and what they’ll actually do. I’ve read all your links you’ve dropped into different comment threads. And while these inconvenient facts make my head explode too — it’s important to know what you’re actually voting for.
Sad. But important.
Doesn’t mean I’ll ever in a million years vote for a Republican though.
“You are TOO a victim of sexism! You’re just too dumb to see it like I do!!!!!”
yeah. i got that vibe in a lot of other things too, which can get pretty annoying.
Doesn’t mean I’ll ever in a million years vote for a Republican though.
thank goodness for that.
and thanks for the kind words. i’m just doing my best to move conversations a little leftward, in the grand hope that things will improve everywhere as a result :)
